I recently attended the 2018 Bioceuticals Symposium where I learned all about PANS from Dr Elisa Song.
It has just occurred to me to do a blog post on this topic as it is an area that I have a large interest in treating in my clinic.
PANS: Pediatric Acute onset Neuropsychological Syndrome. This is where a virus or bacterial infection (or something else) can cause inflammation of the gut and brain of children. PANDAS is a well researched version of this, which involves streptococcus bacteria, but many other things can cause it (for example mould exposure, or heavy metal exposure)
Symptoms range from OCD behaviours and tics, to raging tantrums, to spacing off, to regression of other behaviours such as toilet training.
These triggers can inflame the gut, then the brain, and then the behaviours occur.
